I received the B.Eng. degree from the School of Automation at Southeast University (Nanjing, Jiangsu, China) in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) in 2007. In 2005, I visited the Illinois Genetic Algorithms Laboratory (led by Prof. David E. Goldberg) at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign (Urbana, Illinois, USA) for three months. From 2007 to 2009, I worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Vision and Image Processing Lab in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada). From 2010 to 2012, I worked in the MISTIS (now known as STATIFY) Team at INRIA Grenoble-Rhône-Alpes (Grenoble, France), firstly as a Postdoctoral Researcher and then as an Expert Engineer. From 2012 to 2017, I worked in the School of Computer Science and IT (now known as the School of Computing Technologies) at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) as a Vice-Chancellor's Research Fellow, a Lecturer and then a Senior Lecturer. In 2017, I joined the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (now known as the Department of Computing Technologies) at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) as an Associate Professor and got promoted to Professor in 2021.

Currently, I am the Director of Swinburne Intelligent Data Analytics Lab based in the Digital Capability Research Platform and Deputy Director of the Space Technology and Industry Institute. I was also the Founding Director (2018-2020) of the Master (and Graduate Certificate) of Data Science Course.

Swinburne Academic Profile

My primary research field is Computational Intelligence which studies biologically and linguistically motivated computational paradigms and approaches to solve complex real-world problems to which traditional methods are ineffective or infeasible. It is a subfield of AI, consisting of three pillars, i.e., Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computation and Fuzzy Systems. Notably, Neural Networks are the scaffold of Deep Learning which is a subfield of Machine Learning and the mainstay of modern AI techniques, driving the reviving and booming of AI in recent years.

My major research interests include Machine Learning, Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computation, Computer Vision, Remote Sensing, Services Computing and Edge Intelligence. Particularly, I am interested in Collaborative Learning and Optimization (COLO) which studies on synergising machine learning and intelligent optimisation techniques while leveraging unprecedented computing power to solve challenging problems that involve learning and/or optimisation tasks.

I am currently the Chair of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Student Activities and Young Professionals Sub-committee, Vice-Chair of the IEEE CIS Neural Networks Technical Committee, Vice-Chair of the IEEE CIS Emergent Technologies Task Force on ˇ°Multitask Learning and Multitask Optimizationˇ±, Vice-Chair of the IEEE CIS Neural Networks Task Force on ˇ°Deep Edge Intelligence, and Chair of the IEEE CIS Neural Networks Task Force on ˇ°Deep Vision in Spaceˇ±. I was the General Co-Chair of the 2022 IEEE International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2022) held in Padua, Italy, and Chair of the IEEE CIS Neural Networks Technical Committee during the 2021-2022 term.

I am looking for highly self-motivated Master (by Reserach) and PhD students, postdocs, and visitors (incl. both students and scholars) to work in my team.

  • For Master (by Research) and PhD applicants, please send me your CV, transcript(s) and research interest statement.

  • For postdoc applicants, please send me your CV, transcipt(s) and THREE most representative publications.

  • For visitors, you should demonstrate existing research exeriences relavant to my research interests. I will only accept a limited number of vistors to garantee we could have sufficient time to work together. If you are interested in visiting my team, please contact me for more details.

Note: For PhD applicants funded by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), Swinburne could provide the tuition fee waiver and scholarhip top-up. Please contact me for more details.
